Hurrell’s healing tune wins

Jan Juc singer-songwriter  Lachy Hurrell has been judged the winner of the 2024 Surf Coast Song Contest.

Hurrell’s song The Clouds moved audiences deeply in its examination of how nature serves as the best medicine for mental health and wellbeing.

His song shone a light on the epiphanies he has in the ocean or in the garden, and its importance in reconnecting him back to earth and being part of “his healthy life.”

Alongside nine other shortlisted finalists, Hurrell performed live on Wednesday evening to an audience of more than 100 people at the Torquay Bowls Club.

The Surf Coast Song Contest highlighted stories of hope, wellbeing and resolution.

Contest co-organiser Lukey Luke congratulated all finalists on their captivating performances.

“It was just a great evening of live music and community connection.

“Lachy’s song was just the right song for the right moment. His song was really inspiring and strong, as was his performance.

“Really, the contest could have been won by anyone. The top three to five were super close.

“I congratulate all of them, and a big thanks also goes to the Torquay Lions Club and Music Workshop for their support.”

For his efforts, Hurrell takes home $1,000 cash, a full day in the professional Medici Studio with producer Tim Henwood to record the winning song, eight hours of studio time with an audio engineer at Don’t Poke The Bear, and a $200 voucher from Music Workshop.

Rounding out the podium and also receiving prizes was Hazel Ray for her song Live Your Life and Zane Tullio for Green.
