Anglesea’s Trail Running Series

The Anglesea Trail Running Series Race has held its’ 15th edition of the race on Sunday 7 July as part of Victoria’s premier Trail Running Series in pristine winter sunshine.

Close to 1,000 participants ran at the event across the four course distances which included the 29km long course, 16km, 7.5km and Friendly-4km race.

The courses offered a mix of coastal trails, weaving bush tracks and sandy beaches, along with the added obstacle of muddy puddles and the river mouth crossing. But it didn’t dampen the smiles and cheers that were seen out on course and across the finish line in the crisp conditions.

Conducted by Torquay event management company Rapid Ascent, the Anglesea race proved once again a favourite among participants for its’ distinctive trail running experience.

“Everyone embraced the diverse elements of the course that make trial running the adventure that it is,” said Event Director Sam Maffett. “We are thrilled to have showcased to our participants the little-known trails that weave through this magnificent coastline that we’re lucky to call home.”

A highlight of the day was not only the glorious winters sunshine, but the Friendly-4km event which provided a fun and supportive course for all ages and abilities, in particular the local community. The top placings went to a number of local kids and family members of those racing the longer distances.

“By providing a welcoming environment, food, coffee and family activities; plus 4 terrific course options, we’ve pulled together all the good bits that make the Series incredibly rewarding,” said Maffett.

Anglesea’s location on the Great Ocean Road was the perfect backdrop for exploring the surrounding trail network. All 4 races began on the white sand of Anglesea Main Beach.

Ticking over 15 years, the Trail Running Series continually proves why it’s evolved into one of the country’s premier trail running events.

The 2024 race schedule includes the following scenic locations: Smiths Gully held in early June, Anglesea on Sunday July 7, and Silvan rounding out the Series on August 4 where the exciting handicap format will be in place.
